Over the weekend, Bruce Gerencser shut down his popular blog Restless Wanderings. Bruce has battled health problems including multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia for several months (maybe years). Although he loves to write and interact, the pain of simply typing on a keyboard became too much.
For most of his adult life, Bruce worked as a fundamentalist Baptist preacher. He believed the King James Version was God’s Perfect Inerrant Word. In the later years of his ministry he subscribed to an intensely conservative version of Calvinist theology. He gave over his professional life to preaching and evangelizing, and took his family along for the ride. He founded and pastored several churches, including some with very large memberships. There’s no doubt Bruce was a true believer.
But somewhere along the way Bruce did something he wasn’t supposed to do. He picked up a book about the Bible. It wasn’t a book that reenforced the hopelessly absurd world of creationist, fundamentalist Christianity, but a book that explained the Bible’s textual and literary history. And then he read another book, and another, and another. Eventually Bruce reached a conclusion that destroyed the basis for his fundamentalist faith: the Bible is not God’s Perfect Inerrant Word. Instead, it’s a collection of books written by sincere men who believed they had encountered the Divine, men who would be fascinated and confused by modern fundamentalist doctrine, men who had unknowingly contributed to a library of profoundly influential writings, but writings that were nonetheless flawed.
And so Bruce became an agnostic. He was sympathetic to Univeralism, but traditional Christianity had gone out the window with the inerrant Bible. My God, he even joined the Democratic Party! Friends and family (not immediate family) shunned him, and accused him of being under some kind of Satanic spell. His real sin was reading too many books. But his wife and children loved him, and Bruce had too much support, intelligence, curiosity, and experience to keep his mouth shut.
Through his blogs, first Bruce Doppings then Restless Wanderings, Bruce waged a relentless attack on the insanity of fundamentalist thinking. He also wrote deeply moving posts about his personal struggles and his past. His writing inspired untold numbers to stare fundamentalism in the face and no longer be afraid of it. And although his posts were models of careful, rational thought, they were never cold. There was an infectious warmth in the way Bruce approached people through his writing, probably a residual effect of his days as a minister. He made readers feel like old friends. And he practiced what he preached: he accepted people as they were, religious or not.
Bruce would laugh at the idea that God had used years of hardship to produce something good in the end. Yet it’s difficult to ignore the enormous impact he had on so many lives through the Internet, an impact made possible because of his extensive experience in fundamentalism. I do not know if Bruce will appear again on the Internet. He values his family above all else, and he wants to enjoy his life. So his decision to stop blogging, facebooking, emailing, etc. is reasonably selfish, and I support him. But I hope to hear from him again, and I hope his circumstances change in the right way to allow him to start blogging again. There’s a sinful world that would do well to listen to him.
Amen! I was heart-broken when I saw today that his blog was no longer. Of course I totally understand and support his decision, but I so loved his blog. He will be missed.
I miss him already! Please tell him that his help was MUCH appreciated, and that I wish him well. Is it possible that his blogs are archived? I certainly hope so.
Kudos to Bruce. Miss Bruce’s wit, but glad he’s doing what’s best for him. Bruce is a brilliant big hearted man who inspires me.
Thanks everyone for commenting about Bruce’s blog. Please continue to share your thoughts.
I’m going to try and email him again, as I did after he’d shut down the previous blog. I understand that he has a disability, but I don’t get why he apparently erases everything from the web he’d written previously, especially since it took such an enormous effort for him to write, and touched so many people. He must have a couple thousand articles (counting previous blogs) that have gone down the memory hole.
Plus a few thousand more of our comments.
I’ve never seen this blog before, but since you’re interested, would it be possible to somehow merge any of Bruce’s articles into it, should they miraculously be made available again? Or can you suggest a better place?
I’d also hope he might still consider writing the occasional article in the future, by piggybacking onto someone else’s blog. I understand he can’t do it alone anymore and wish him well.
Can you guys drop him a line about this also, if you think it will help?
Hi, RAT!!!!!! Nice to see you! After asking Rodney if any of Bruce’s postings were archived, LO AND BEHOLD, the very one I was hoping to find showed up.
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:8WS5ay6euPQJ:restlesswanderings.com/tag/new-bethany-homes/+%22new+bethany+survivors%22&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
I don’t know if it was on purpose or not, but I am grateful.I have tried to e-mail Bruce as well, but the last message I sent him was returned as “undeliverable”.
Rodney, if you have any way at all the communicate with him, please tell him that myself and MANY OTHERS wish him well, and are most appreciative for his Jack Patterson/Reclamation Ranch/Mack Ford/New Bethany contribution, as well as EVERYTHING he has written. I hope to see him online again.
I will tell him if I ever get in touch with him. I think it would mean a lot to him to know how many lives he touched.
I can still get to the Restless Wanderings articles through Google Reader, but that’s because I had subscribed prior to Bruce taking down the blog. If anyone wants a copy of one of his posts, I can email it to you— this is assuming I’m not overwhelmed with requests and that his articles don’t eventually disappear from the Google archive.
I hope Bruce’s readers will continue to comment here, and share their stories about what Bruce’s blog meant to them. You can also use the comments here to send messages to Bruce. I’m sure eventually he will see them.
Can you tell me the address I should add to “add a subscription” in case it will somehow let me see the parts of the blog that you still can?
http://www.google.com/reader/view/#overview-page
It would be http://restlesswanderings.com, but I don’t think you can add the subscription now that the site has been taken off line. But try it and let us know.
Thank you for letting us know what happened to Bruce.
He is a very courageous person and I respect him and wish him well. I do miss his writing and I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.
You’re welcome, Sherry. I hope Bruce will be writing again someday.
Hi Teresa, I’ve also found the odd cached article, but I think they will soon disappear. Google probably saves them for a few days, in case a site is only temporarily down. And the 67 comments for the Bethany article are gone also. It’s nice to hear from you. I did manage to save Bruce’s list of favorite blogs, so maybe I’ll see you there.
You’re right, Rodney, you can’t add the subscription now, unfortunately. Google just tells you the site has no feed and that it will let you know if there are changes. It was worth a try.
I don’t have a clue about running a blog, but if I ever did get the old articles, would there be a way for them to eventually be merged into an ongoing one?
It’s as if a favorite author has somehow made all his books disappear from readers’ shelves upon retirement. I just don’t get it.
Yes, you could merge the articles into an existing blog. But there are copyright issues raised by doing this, and you would need Bruce’s permission to repost his articles. My offer to email archived articles (above) may not be something I can do legally. I didn’t think about this when I wrote that comment.
I really, really enjoy Bruce’s view and commentary. Never met him, but I feel like he is a good friend. I hope he joins us again in the digital ether, but if not, my thoughts are with him and my thanks go out to him for sharing so much of himself with us.
I meant if by some miracle Bruce was found and consented. 98% of what he wrote in those blogs has disappeared from the web anyway, so of course he’d have to be involved. That’s why I was hoping someone who knew him better would see this and ask.
I just hope he kept a backup!
I just found your blog after doing a Google search for “Restless Wanderings.” I was wondering what had happened to Bruce’s blog. Thank you for the information. I enjoyed Bruce’s writing very much. His presence online and his blog will both be sorely missed.
If there is any way (with Bruce’s permission) that we could post his previous blog entries online, that would be great.
And here’s another former commenter who wishes Bruce well, and hopes he realized how much he’ll be missed. (Also, ditto what everyone else said about taking down all his work. If there’s any way to restore it, turn off further comments, and leave it up… I’d be really grateful.)
I drove past a silly church sign this morning and was inspired to write a blog post about it… which left me feeling a bit nostalgic. Hope Bruce is doing all right; hope the rest of you are as well.
He’s back again… I think:

BRUCE! BRUCE! BRUCE! BRUCE!!!!!!!!!!
Gone again, as of around 10/5. The last one I saw was on disillusionment with Obama, and a few people’s comments got a little nasty. They curiously sounded like those I’ve heard from almost every Republican I’ve ever known, who would defend McCain and Bush with the same “at least he’s not the other guy.” I guess the sheep on both sides think alike. If only I’d had the chance to point that out. ;-)
I did subscribe to the Google Feeds thing this time, so I have dozens of articles, but the comments don’t get saved.
Hey, Rodney. I got the “taking a break” message Bruce sent out. I would REALLY like to have copies of certain articles he wrote for NW Ohio Skeptics. He featured a couple about the New Bethany Home. Can you get in touch with me on facebook?

I miss his writing. I hope he enters the fray again at some point, but wish him the best.
Here’s a great letter from Bruce in the Defiance, Ohio paper, The Crescent News

I see I’m not the only one looking around to see if Bruce has popped back up. I miss having him around.
In the short time I’ve been a part of the blogging universe, I have been moved greatly by Bruce’s writings. Even if he isn’t able to write regularly due to his condition, I would love to see a site devoted to his writings, where he could also contribute new works when he is able.
We miss you, Bruce. That’s all I’m sayin. :-)
Yeah, that part I never understood. Why not leave up what was written before? He knows there are many who really appreciate what he says.
